Luckily, here in Yorkshire we're blessed with a whole host of fantastic places for a local break. From the gothic splendour of Whitby to culinary delights of Malton, there's always more to see in God's own country. In England, people are allowed to stay in self-contained accommodation, such as a holiday cottage, from April 12, while hotels and B&Bs are set to open on May 17. Check out some of the suggestions below for inspiration.
1. Whitby
The town of Whitby is an ancient and beautiful sea port, surrounded by the magnificent countryside of the North York Moors National Park.
2. York
York is absolutely crammed with history, with loads of museums and a thriving dining scene.
3. Scarborough
Visit Scarborough for its two sweeping sandy beaches, rugged castle ruins, and museums for rain day.
4. Hebden Bridge
Wander the creative, bohemian streets of Hebden Bridge, and you can feel the influence of the writers and artists who flocked to the town around the 70s and 80s. From artisan shops and inspiring galleries to organic pavement cafés and charming picture houses, the town is justifiably proud of its artistic identity. Just a few minutes away you will find pretty wooded valleys and picturesque heather moorland.
5. Ilkley
Ilkley is the ideal base for a holiday in the Yorkshire Dales. This pretty, traditional spa town offers some of Yorkshire's finest tearooms, magnificent countryside and a rock climbers' paradise with the famous Cow and Calf Rocks sitting proudly above the town, on the rolling Yorkshire moors.
6. Harrogate
With its handsome historic buildings and verdant gardens, Harrogate is one of Yorkshire's most elegant destinations. Set aside a weekend and indulge in an antiques hunt in the morning, lunch at the famous Betty's tearoom and then a visit to the luxurious Turkish baths. With an evening champagne picnic in the floral Valley Gardens, it's the perfect place for a relaxing break in Yorkshire.
