Detectives from West Yorkshire Police believe the incident was a case of mistaken identity.
West Yorkshire Police today release new CCTV images and footage of a stolen blue Ford Focus C-Max car they are convinced was involved in the murder.
The car, registration number YH54 SBV, was recovered in the Chapeltown area of Leeds on June 25. It had been stolen from the Little London area on June 11.
Four days before the shooting it was caught on CCTV pulling on to the forecourt of the BP Garage on Roundhay Road, Chapeltown, where its rear offside tyre was filled with air.
When the car was recovered, it was found that the rear offside tyre had been replaced with the vehicle's spare "spacesaver" wheel.
Det Supt Steve Payne said: "There was a number of vehicles on the garage forecourt when the Focus pulled in and the tyre was filled with air, so it is very likely that someone may have seen the driver or passenger filling the tyre.
"This tyre was probably punctured before it was filled up on June 20 which would explain why the spacesaver wheel was on the car when it was recovered. So it is also possible that someone may have witnessed the driver or passenger changing the wheel by the roadside between June 20 and June 24, when Adam was shot.
"We would encourage anyone who saw the car on the forecourt or who saw someone changing the car's tyre to contact police.
"We also believe the car will have stayed in the Leeds area from the time it was stolen to the time it was recovered, so we would urge anyone who has seen the car during this time to contact us."
Detectives trying to find the killers have said the woman involved had earlier been knocking at doors in the area asking for someone called "Michelle".
The woman is described as white, 27 to 28 years old, 5ft 4ins to 5ft 5ins with dark brown hair, olive skin and dark eyes.
She was wearing a baggy black fleece or cardigan over a round-neck black top.
The three men are all described as black and wore masks and green camouflage clothing,
Mr Payne said: "We are convinced the answer to who killed Adam lies within the local community, and we would encourage anyone with information to come forward."
Mr Chadwick left a three-year-old daughter, Ruby.
