Leeds Crown Court heard neighbours saw the break-in.
They alerted the house owner and contacted police. Bashir Ahmed, prosecuting, said: “He was found hiding in the loft under some insulation.”
Black, 25, of Kentmere Approach, Seacroft, Leeds, pleaded guilty to burglary.

Stephen Welford, mitigating, said Black was released from prison on licence in 2016 and had been making good progress on a course designed to address his drug and alcohol problems.
Mr Welford said Black had been upset following the death of his grandfather and he carried out the burglary a day after attending his funeral.
Jailing Black, judge Tom Bayliss, QC, said: “Thanks to the vigilance and public spiritedness of neighbours you were caught red-handed hiding in the loft.
“The householders were alerted by the neighbours on the scene when you were in their house.
“It is aggravated by the fact that you were on licence at the time.”
