Whinmoor Warriors rugby league club will soon scrum down on a brand new pitch.
The club have been using a grass pitch at Fieldhead Carr Primary School, but its success meant that one playing field was no longer enough.
The club contacted local councillors for help and after long negotiations they managed to get £50,000 to pay for new facilities.
The money came from the Outer Area East Committee and also from cash set aside by developers to pay for improvements in the local area. Work has started recently to replace an old artificial pitch at the school with grass and this will be completed for the Warriors to use during the coming season.
Coun Peter Gruen (Lab, Crossgates and Whinmoor) said: "It has been a long campaign to raise the funds to pay for the new pitch, but it has been well worth the wait.
"I hope the members of Whinmoor Warriors enjoy it and it spurs them on to even greater success in the future.
"I also hope that it will encourage more young people living in this area to take up the sport."
