After the former Arsenal manager failed to set the world alight in his first season at the helm at Elland Road, Graham’s Whites found their groove in the 1997/1998 season.
The addition of Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink was crucial as, though he was a little slow to get going, the Dutch striker boasted a goal haul of 22 come the end of the season.
Second-tier opponents served up shock exits, with massively struggling Reading kicking Leeds out of the League Cup before Wolverhampton Wanderers denied United a place in the FA Cup semi-finals on the Whites’ own turf.
What counted, though, was Leeds’ much-improved fifth-placed finish, which earned Graham’s side qualification into the UEFA Cup.
