Kevin Keegan - who would later produce an iconic rant in his post-match debrief with Sky Sports - saw his team claim a narrow 1-0 win.
Keith Gillespie was the man who separated the teams with his header the only strike of the match, which handed Leeds their sixth straight league defeat and summed up a disappointing campaign - with the Whites having been beaten in the League Cup final by Aston Villa months earlier.
Speed would fail to feature in the final two league games of the season against Tottenham Hotspur and Coventry City before departing to join Everton in the summer.
