Leeds Rhinos are in the market for an “experienced player” after their Australian prop Matt Prior announced his immediate retirement today (Tuesday), at the age of 35.

Prior joined Leeds from Cronulla Sharks ahead of the 2020 season and was a Challenge Cup winner in his debut campaign.

The last of his 63 competitive appearances for Rhinos was September’s Betfred Super League Grand Final defeat by St Helens.

Prior was named player of the year in his first season at Leeds and signed a new two-year deal last July.

The decision to hang up his boots clears a spot on Rhinos’ overseas quota for the 2023 season, as well as fresh salary cap space.

A two-time NRL Grand Final winner - with St George in 2010 and Cronulla six years later - he made his top-flight debut in 2006 and played more than 250 times in Australia’s elite competition.

Prior - who featured in 23 games for Leeds this year, 17 of those in the starting side - said: “It’s a decision I haven’t taken lightly, but to finish with the Rhinos in a Grand Final seems like a fitting way to bring my career to a close.

“I’ve been fortunate to play for so long in the NRL and Super League without too many injuries and I can look back with so many good memories.

“My last three years in Leeds with the Rhinos have been especially good for me and my family. I would like to thank all the players, staff and fans for their welcome and support.”

Rhinos chief executive Gary Hetherington added: “Matt will retire with everyone’s best wishes, having served the team and club so well over the past three seasons.

“His retirement will now provide an opportunity to recruit another senior player to the squad, if need be.”
