Wakefield Trinity agree Eddie Battye signing as London Broncos bid a terse farewell

Wakefield Trinity have paid a fee to bring London Broncos prop Eddie Battye to Belle Vue on a three-year deal with head coach Chris Chester labelling him a “significant” signing for the West Yorkshire club.

It is no surprise; Battye was one of Trinity’s leading players after initially joining from the Championship outfit on loan last September.

The former Sheffield Eagles forward, 29, made eight appearances for Wakefield and consistently clearly made his mark in a struggling team.

Battye had impressed for London in Super League in 2019 before their relegation and – being so tough, skilled and industrious – it was obvious he had all the credentials to flourish in the top-flight.

After more than 100 games for the Broncos, Battye, who hails from Penistone in South Yorkshire, has returned to the Broad Acres and he said: “I’m just really pleased we’ve got it over the line.

“I’ve always wanted to play in Super League and to get the chance to do that at Wakefield is brilliant.

“I loved my time here last season and I’m looking forward to joining up with the squad once more.

“I’ve been at London for five years and it’s a great club. I wish them all the best in the future as I’ve loved every minute there.”

Chester added: “I’m really pleased we’ve got Eddie Battye tied up for three years.

“To finally get Eddie’s signature on a piece of paper is great news for the club and great news for Eddie.

”He made a big impression throughout the 2020 season and I’m looking forward to working with him over the next three years.
